What Is A Friend

If you look in the dictionary it will tell you that the definition of friendship is a state of being friends; friendly relation, or attachment, to a person, or between persons; affection arising from mutual esteem and good will; friendliness; amity; good will. That all sounds nice, but it doesn’t cover the fact that a true friendship is a relationship that can survive the test of time and remain unconditional.

We live our lives hoping that the friends that we have are there forever. But is that really possible? We start developing friends at a very young age. As the years pass some friends fall like leaves on a tree and maybe one or two stay attached like strong branches on a tree. Needless to say we go through many friends in our lifetime. In your heart, what are the characteristics of a true friend? I feel a true friend is someone that accepts you for who you are and has your best interest at heart. I'll explain. I have a few friends that have been a constant part of my life even though we have been a long distance apart for years. What makes it special is that the friendships are unconditional. Its based on who we are and not what we do. I can go a month or two without communicating and as soon as the conversation starts, it’s always the same. We never judge our situations but always ask if there is something we can do to help each other. That's just one aspect of friendship. The best part about friendship is an individual can determine their own experiences. You will eventually know if someone can be classified as a friend. Last but not least, true friendship requires: Trust, Loyalty, and Love. If that's not present watch out.
